May has continued to be productive for Chinook fishing in Nanaimo. Although still catch and release, our latest Nanaimo fishing charters groups have had a blast hooking into these early season tough fighting fish. With strong hits and multiple double headers, it’s been nothing short of exciting! The average size for these chinook have been significantly larger than previously years with a handful being in the mid teens. Early season chinook runs tend to be a smaller average size than the summer or fall runs but this year we are already seeing larger fish showing up consistently. Although we haven’t been targeting coho, we have been seeing some showing up recently which hopefully continues as they open up June 1st. Crabbing has slowed a bit as it typically does this time of year as the commercial boats have been harvesting for the last few months. The weather has been making things a bit tough for our latest Nanaimo fishing charters with high winds and some rain but hopefully the warm summer weather will be back soon.
