June Nanaimo Fishing Charters Report

June is the start of Coho salmon opening for retention in the waters off Nanaimo. After a month of targeting lingcod and catch and release salmon fishing, it’s nice to be able to keep salmon now. As per every year, coho are open for hatchery or (clipped) only. Wild fish or unclipped must be released. Retention limits are 2 per license holder. On our latest Nanaimo fishing charters in June, we’ve had a decent mix of coho and chinook salmon. In fact the chinook fishing, although catch and release until July 15, has been excellent early this season. Coho are showing up in bigger schools by the week and the ratio of hatchery to wild changes daily. Some days it may be a struggle to find hatchery ones and other days it may be a 50-50 ratio or even favorable to hatchery fish. The coho are fattening up before heading to the rivers in 3 to 4 months, so while they may be on the smaller side right now, they grow extremely fast this time of year.
