Chinook salmon (king) salmon finally opened July 15th. Due to high winds almost every day since the opening we have been more restricted in where we’ve been able to fish on our latest Nanaimo fishing charters. Even so we have had some great catches with some beautiful slot sized spring salmon. With the winds finally coming down in the last day or so, we are looking forward to fishing more areas that we would normally be fishing when the winds are reasonable. The coho salmon fishing in Nanaimo has remained strong but the large schools are moving on a daily basis. The ratio for hatchery or marked to non hatchery has changed quite a bit over the last month. As more hatchery fish are caught and kept you do eventually start getting more non hatchery fish as there’s less of the others around. We are still getting hatchery coho but they are a bit more challenging to find in the numbers we saw a month or 2 ago. The sizes have been great for this season so far though.
Don’t hesitate to book your next Nanaimo fishing charter with Unreel Charters this summer!
