This week we started our season off with some great Nanaimo fishing charters. Over the last week good numbers of spring salmon have started coming through the area. Most are in the 5-15 pound range with some up to 20 pounds caught. The fish are out a few miles past the fingers, typical for this time of year. Since these chinook are just passing through and not holding around structure like later in the season, every day out is different. Most are down deep 150-200ft but some have been caught shallower. The standard glow gear with green small spoons are working well. Most chinooks we have cleaned have had 5-6" herring in their stomachs. Luckily the weather cooperated for us on most days we had fishing charters in Nanaimo. Although we are hoping these cloudy rainy days will end soon! Now is a great time to get out and try for some of these early season chinooks!
